Only in spaghetti.
I’ve never seen any.
Only if you go in the water. I to share your fear of sharks though probably not to your degree. However, shark attacks around Italy are rare and most are non fatal. There are actually a lot of sharks in the mediterranean, but most species are harmless.
The point is that pretty much any time you get into salt water you have the chance of running into a shark. But with thousands of people getting into the water each year and coming back out, it seems pretty stupid to let a 0.46% of a chance ruin your vacation to one of the most stunning places in the world.
There are some 50 species of sharks in the Mediterranean around Italy; only 12 of those pose a threat to humans. However, the number of shark attacks is extremely small, especially considering the number of people swimming or in the sea.
In the world about 10 people per year are killed by sharks. In the whole Mediterranean (not just Italy) there are 0.42 shark attacks per year. In the last 100 years about 6 people have been killed off the coast of Italy by sharks.
You have more chance of having your airplane crash or being struck by lightening, but if you’re scared then either don’t go in the water or only go in the water where there are loads of other people.
